About Me

Hi! My name is Annmarie Hardenia Akpan. I’m 25 years old, a proud first-generation American on my mother’s side, with deep roots in Sierra Leone through both of my parents. I’m a communications and administrative professional, a storyteller at heart, and a creative who’s passionate about using media to amplify voices, share stories, and reflect culture.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Towson University, with a focus on media relations, marketing, and public relations. My journey in storytelling began back in third grade when I started writing short stories, and that passion grew into writing for my high school newspaper at age 16. I was especially drawn to the entertainment section—writing about red carpet events, pop culture, and fashion shows like the Met Gala sparked my early dream of becoming an entertainment reporter.

My college experience was a critical turning point. I began at Montgomery College, where I explored courses like video production and audio storytelling and created my first podcast, AnnMarie Diaries, which is available on Spotify. After transferring to Towson University, I dove deeper into media through classes in broadcast journalism, mass media graphics, feature writing, sports journalism, and women’s studies. These courses helped shape my ability to craft stories with empathy, accuracy, and cultural depth.

I’ve written for The Baltimore Watchdog as a staff writer, covering local government, business, and community stories. I also interned at the DC Spotlight Newspaper, where I contributed political stories, global news features, and even conducted an interview with Yacht Rock Revue’s lead singer. I also had the amazing opportunity to volunteer at the 64th Capital Emmy Awards, where I met and networked with journalists and producers from across the DMV region.

In addition to journalism, I’ve independently built a digital content presence since 2018. I’ve created beauty content, collaborated with brands like Zeelool, and had my work reposted across platforms. My creativity has made its way to TikTok and Instagram, where I share lifestyle content that blends culture, identity, and personal growth. Being a creative is at the core of who I am—and whether it’s reporting a story, sharing a moment, or uplifting a brand, I believe in the power of visuals and words to leave a lasting impact.

Why I’m an Asset to your Team?

Beyond storytelling, I bring strong communication, organizational, and creative skills that make me a valuable asset to any team. Whether I’m working in a newsroom, a corporate office, a PR agency, or behind the scenes in human resources, I show up ready to contribute, collaborate, and create.

My background in media has equipped me with the ability to adapt quickly, think critically, and manage multiple projects under pressure. I understand how to craft messages that resonate with diverse audiences—whether through digital content, internal communications, or external campaigns. I also have real-world experience in administrative and HR support roles, where I’ve developed skills in coordination, planning, and people-focused service.

I’m passionate about building connections, creating meaningful content, and helping organizations grow through effective communication strategies. I lead with empathy, think creatively, and stay committed to excellence in everything I do. Whether it’s through a campaign, a press release, a story, or a staff initiative—I care about getting it right, and I care about impact.

In any setting, I bring passion, innovation, and heart. I’m ready to grow, ready to lead, and ready to contribute.

My long-term goal is to publish a memoir titled AnnMarie Diaries—a coming-of-age story that explores identity, womanhood, culture, and growth. The book is about navigating life as a 20-something West African-American woman, balancing tradition and modern identity, and owning your voice in every chapter of life. Influences like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Rupi Kaur, and Young Pueblo have helped shape the lens through which I see the world and the way I want to share my truth.

I believe storytelling isn’t just about reporting—it’s about connection. My work centers on highlighting the voices and stories that often go unheard. Through journalism, content creation, or future books, I hope to inspire others to reflect, relate, and rise.
